The Deer River Area Community Fund is inviting residents, businesses, and supporters of the Deer River area to make a lasting investment in their community through a new dollar‑for‑dollar matching opportunity that will permanently strengthen local giving.

Thanks to a recent matching grant from the Blandin Foundation administered through the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation (GRACF), the Deer River Area Community Fund can leverage up to $50,000 in new endowment gifts over the next two years. Every dollar raised will be matched dollar‑for‑dollar by GRACF—doubling the impact of each gift and permanently increasing the fund’s endowment and annual grantmaking—for a total of $100,000 into the Deer River Area Community Fund.

The match period is open now through December 31, 2027, and all gifts received during that timeframe will count toward the $50,000 matching goal.

The Deer River Area Community Fund celebrates the strength, natural beauty, and close‑knit spirit of the community by having a permanent endowment that supports local nonprofit and charitable needs. Guided by a local advisory committee, the fund provides annual grants that benefit programs and activities throughout the Deer River area, ensuring that today’s generosity continues to support future generations.

Over the last five years, the fund has awarded almost $50,000 in grants to projects and organizations such as the Deer River Food Shelf, Deer River High School Music Boosters, King Elementary, and the Lundeen Park shelter and playground —demonstrating strong and ongoing community support.

“An endowment gives our community a reliable source of funding year after year. This matching opportunity is a rare moment when a gift can do twice as much and last forever—supporting Deer River today and well into the future.” – Linda Baker, advisory committee member of the Deer River Area Community Fund

Endowment funds are a powerful way to create lasting community impact. While annual donations are important, endowment gifts are permanently invested to provide steady, long-term support while preserving and growing the principal. Through an endowment held at the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation, community funds benefit from professional investment management and diversified risk—regardless of fund size—ensuring long‑term sustainability and stability.

This matching opportunity also supports the growing importance of generational gifting. Northern Minnesota’s hardworking and generous residents have built their lives and livelihoods with the support of their hometowns. Over the next 20–30 years, more than $530 million is expected to transfer between generations in Itasca County alone. Even directing a small portion of those assets to community endowments could transform local communities for decades to come.

By making an outright or a planned gift to the Deer River Area Community Fund, donors can honor the role the community played in their success, receive potential tax benefits, and help ensure a strong future for the place they call home.

The Deer River Area Community Fund is guided by a dedicated local advisory committee, including Linda Baker, Emily Benham, Cindy Doty, Amber Kongsjord, Jim Peterson, Gwenn Smith, Jan Swanson, and Christina VanDeventer.
