The Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation (GRACF) is celebrating a year of significant growth, innovation, and community impact, made possible through strong partnerships, generous donors, and dedicated leadership.
This year, the Foundation was selected to participate in a special leadership development cohort hosted by Community Giving—an organization that unites foundations across Minnesota—made possible through a grant from the Blandin Foundation. The cohort provided enhanced training for both the Foundation’s Executive Director and board members. As part of this initiative, the Foundation hosted an Evening of Impact event, raising $25,000, which was matched by the Blandin Foundation through the Community Giving cohort. The matching funds were used to establish a new unrestricted, endowed Community Impact Fund, designed to provide flexible, annual support for emerging community needs beyond the traditional grant cycle. An additional $25,000 from the cohort funding will be awarded to current granting needs.
The Foundation’s annual Seeds of Change fundraiser also saw strong community support, raising more than $33,000. Of that total, $15,000 was directed to four Field of Interest Funds to strengthen future grantmaking, and $15,000 supported the Foundation Fund, helping sustain long-term operations, with the remaining funds advancing other Foundation priorities.
In 2025, the Foundation hosted its first-ever Estate Planning Seminar, welcoming more than 20 community members interested in planning for their future and legacy giving. The Foundation will continue to host these events each year.
Another milestone this year was the creation of the Emeritus Council, made up of 17 past board members. The group held its inaugural meeting this year and will provide valuable insight, institutional memory, and continued advocacy for the Foundation.
Through its scholarship programs, the Foundation awarded 207 scholarships to 127 Greater Itasca Area students, totaling $333,000. In addition, more than $190,000 was awarded to 40 local nonprofits through the annual competitive grant cycle, including $67,000 granted from donor advised funds.
Further, at the end of the year, the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation was awarded a $1 million, two-year grant from the Blandin Foundation to support efforts that build lasting community wealth, strengthen small communities, and grow permanent endowments across the Greater Itasca Area. As communities across the Greater Itasca Area navigate population shifts and economic change, an unprecedented transfer of wealth is underway. An estimated $539 million in assets is expected to change hands in Itasca County by 2030, presenting a powerful opportunity for local impact. GRACF is intentionally positioning itself to help ensure these resources are reinvested locally—strengthening communities now and for generations to come.
“These accomplishments reflect the power of collaboration and the deep generosity of our community,” said Mindy Nuhring, Executive Director of the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation. “We are grateful to everyone who showed up for our work this year—those who attended our events, our generous donors and fund holders, our past and present board members, and partners like Community Giving and the Blandin Foundation. Together, their support makes lasting impact possible across our region.”
