After an extraordinary community campaign that raised more than $1.3 million to make a new home for Great Tails Animal Rescue a reality, the organization is entering an exciting new chapter. A recent gift to the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation has helped establish the Great Tails Animal Rescue Endowment Fund, creating a permanent source of support for the rescue’s future. With the building project complete, attention can now turn to long-term sustainability and the resources needed to continue caring for animals in our community.

Last year, a generous anonymous donor made a $200,000 gift to establish the Great Tails Animal Rescue Endowment Fund at the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation. That remarkable gift created a permanent source of support for Great Tails Animal Rescue, and now the community is invited to build on that foundation and help strengthen the fund for years to come.

The endowed fund will support the ongoing operations of Great Tails Animal Rescue in Cohasset. Building on the initial $200,000 gift, Great Tails and the Community Foundation are inviting animal lovers and supporters of the organization’s mission to help grow the fund.

“Great Tails has built an incredible network of people who care deeply about animals in our community,” said Mindy Nuhring, Executive Director of the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation. “This anonymous donor created a way for that support to extend far into the future. Every gift added to the endowment helps strengthen a permanent resource for Great Tails and the animals that will depend on them for years to come.”

Great Tails Animal Rescue serves Itasca County and surrounding communities by providing shelter, veterinary care, and second chances for stray, abandoned, and surrendered animals. Through adoption, foster care, education, and community resources, Great Tails works to protect domestic animals and help them find safe, permanent homes.

The Great Tails Animal Rescue Endowment Fund is designed to provide long-term support for the rescue’s mission. Gifts to the fund are invested through the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation, with annual distributions supporting operations while the principal remains invested for future growth. By leveraging the Community Foundation’s investment management and stewardship, the endowment creates a dependable source of revenue that complements annual fundraising, grants, and other forms of support.

The anonymous donor’s $200,000 gift established the foundation of the endowment, but its long-term impact will be shaped by the community. Every contribution helps build a permanent resource that will support Great Tails and the animals it serves for years to come.

Gifts of any size can be made to the Great Tails Animal Rescue Endowment Fund. As additional gifts are added to the fund, they become part of the permanent investment supporting Great Tails and its mission.

“A donor doesn’t need to make a $200,000 gift to make a lasting difference,” said Nuhring. “When many people contribute to an endowment, those gifts come together and grow into something meaningful. Someone can make a gift today knowing it will become part of a permanent resource supporting Great Tails for years to come.”
