August is National Make-A-Will Month, and the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation (GRACF) is encouraging community members to take an important step toward protecting their loved ones by creating or updating their wills. The annual observance also serves as an opportunity to consider how a simple estate plan can leave a lasting impact through charitable giving.

Despite its importance, many adults have not yet created a will. Make-A-Will Month serves as a timely reminder to put a plan in place and ensure that loved ones—and the causes that matter most—are cared for in the future.

“A will is one of the simplest yet most meaningful ways to care for the people and causes you love,” said Mindy Nuhring, Executive Director of the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation. “It provides peace of mind for your family while giving you the opportunity to reflect on the legacy you want to leave.”

A will offers many important benefits. It ensures that your assets are distributed according to your wishes, allows you to name guardians for minor children, and can simplify the estate settlement process for your loved ones. Having a will can also reduce confusion and potential family conflict during an already difficult time. For many people, it also creates an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy by supporting charitable organizations and community causes that have been meaningful throughout their lives.

For those interested in giving back, including a charitable gift in a will can be an easy and flexible way to support the future of the Greater Itasca Area. Even a small percentage of an estate can create a lasting impact for generations by supporting local nonprofits, scholarships, community initiatives, or one of the Community Foundation’s endowed funds.

“A legacy gift doesn’t have to be large to make a difference,” Nuhring said. “Many people are surprised to learn that they can provide for their families first while also making a meaningful investment in the future of our community.”
