For many donors, retirement planning and charitable giving go hand in hand. That’s one reason Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) continue to gain traction as one of the most practical and effective charitable planning tools available to individuals age 70½ and older.
A QCD allows eligible individuals to transfer funds directly from an IRA to a qualified charity without recognizing the distribution as taxable income. As a result, QCDs can help reduce adjusted gross income while supporting causes and organizations that matter most. For donors who take the standard deduction, a QCD can be an especially attractive giving strategy.
Recent changes have made QCDs even more valuable. Congress has expanded planning opportunities by indexing annual giving limits for inflation and allowing certain one-time QCDs, sometimes called Legacy IRAs, to fund charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts. In addition, proposed legislation known as the “Charity Parity Act” would extend QCD treatment beyond IRAs to include employer-sponsored retirement plans such as 401(k)s, 403(b)s, and 457(b)s. If passed, the change would make charitable giving even more accessible for donors whose retirement assets remain in workplace plans.
Helping Donors Achieve Charitable Goals
Consider a common scenario. A donor age 74 is taking Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from a traditional IRA. Because the donor takes the standard deduction, charitable gifts do not generate additional tax savings. By directing a portion of the RMD to a qualified charity through a QCD, the donor may satisfy part or all of the RMD requirement without increasing taxable income. In some cases, this may also help reduce Medicare premium surcharges and lessen the taxation of Social Security benefits.
At the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation, QCDs can help donors support the causes they care about while creating lasting benefits for the Greater Itasca Area.
Support Community Needs
A donor can direct a QCD to GRACF’s Community Impact Fund, providing flexible resources that help address emerging opportunities and community needs throughout the region. These unrestricted dollars allow the Foundation to respond where support is needed most.
Invest in Causes That Matter
Many donors have a passion for a specific area of impact. A QCD can support one of GRACF’s field-of-interest funds, helping advance causes such as the arts, environmental stewardship, animal welfare, opportunities for women and girls, education, or other community priorities. This approach allows donors to focus on the issues they care about while relying on the Foundation’s local expertise and grantmaking knowledge.
Create Educational and Community Legacy
Donors may also use a QCD to support an existing scholarship fund or designated fund held at the Foundation. Whether helping local students pursue higher education or providing ongoing support for a favorite nonprofit organization, these gifts create meaningful impact for years to come.
Don’t Overlook Beneficiary Designations
Charitable planning with retirement assets extends beyond current giving. One of the simplest and most effective ways to create a charitable legacy is through retirement account beneficiary designations.
For many donors, naming a fund at the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation as a beneficiary of an IRA can be a tax-efficient way to support future generations and community causes. It’s also a good opportunity to review beneficiary designations regularly and avoid potential complications. Retirement account beneficiary designations continue to appear in cautionary estate-planning stories and can easily become outdated if left unchecked.
A Valuable Tool for Professional Advisors
For attorneys, CPAs, and financial advisors, QCDs represent a valuable intersection of retirement planning, tax strategy, charitable giving, and legacy planning.
These conversations often begin with Required Minimum Distributions but quickly evolve into broader discussions about values, family priorities, and community impact. By exploring charitable giving opportunities through the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation, advisors can help clients align financial goals with the causes and communities they care about most.
