Community members are invited to lace up their running shoes for a great cause at the 7th Annual Scott Olson Memorial 5K and Scholarship Fundraiser, happening Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Ryan Park in LaPrairie, MN. The event honors the life and legacy of Scott Olson, a beloved Grand Rapids community member, while raising funds for a local scholarship in his name.
Same-day registration will open at 8:00 a.m., with the race beginning promptly at 9:00 a.m. Registration is $30, and all proceeds benefit the Scott A. Olson Memorial Scholarship held at the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation (GRACF). There will be a grab and go breakfast after the race provided by Custom Medical Equipment. Participants who register by July 1 will receive a commemorative t-shirt.
Scott Olson was known for his community spirit, love for running, and dedication to making a difference. A proud half-marathon finisher, Scott frequently participated in local 5Ks, served on the LaPrairie City Council, and was a strong advocate for individuals with disabilities, including his involvement in Special Olympics. He was also an avid supporter of local sports and a devoted family man.
Scott passed away in October 2019 after a courageous battle with blastomycosis. What began as a fundraiser to help with medical expenses has grown into an annual event that supports two annual $1,000 scholarships for local students pursuing post-secondary education. Since its inception, eight scholarships have been awarded thanks to the generosity of race participants and donors. The past and present recipients of the Scott A. Olson Memorial Scholarship are Sydnee Goodrich (2020), Baylie Norris (2021), Zoe Zuehlke (2022), Ruize Xu (2023), Ella Karkela (2024) and Klara Finke (2024), Hailey Kilduff (2025) and Kayla Jenkins (2025).
“This run is a celebration of Scott’s life, his love of community, and his commitment to helping others succeed,” said Jo Czerny, Scott’s sister. “Each year, we’re humbled by the support and honored to continue his legacy.”
