August is National Make-A-Will Month—a great reminder to take care of something that benefits both you and the people you love. Even if you already have a will, trust, or other estate planning documents, this is the perfect time to review them and ensure they still reflect your current wishes, family circumstances, and financial situation.

Creating a will is one of the most important legal steps you can take. It ensures your property is distributed according to your wishes, protects your loved ones, and provides peace of mind knowing your affairs are in order. A will can also create a legacy that lasts beyond your lifetime by supporting causes you care about, allowing you to make a difference in your community for years to come.

If you have a fund at the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation (GRACF)—or would like to create one—your estate plan can designate that fund as a recipient of gifts through a will, trust, or beneficiary designation on a retirement account or life insurance policy. Bequests from qualified retirement plans, like IRAs, are especially tax-efficient. Because the Community Foundation is tax-exempt, these gifts are not reduced by income tax and are not subject to estate tax—meaning more of your gift goes directly to the community. You can also choose to donate to an existing fund; a full list of funds can be found at gracf.org under “Donate” and “Funds.”

The Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation can help you explore options that reflect your values and make the most of your legacy. GRACF will host a seminar on October 7, 2025, covering essential topics in wills, trusts, and other ways to provide for the people and causes you care about. Watch for more details or contact us at 218-999-9100 or info@gracf.org if you’re interested in attending. Let’s ensure your legacy—and your love for this community—are preserved for generations to come.
