Thanks to a $500 grant from the Greater Itasca Area Community Fund, fourteen talented students from Robert J. Elkington Middle School (RJEMS) and Grand Rapids Senior High (GRHS) had the opportunity to compete at the Minnesota State Science Fair on March 28, 2025 — an experience that not only recognized their hard work but also celebrated their scientific creativity on a statewide stage.
The journey began with 80 students participating in the RJEMS Science Fair on January 30, 2025. Top projects and 40 students advanced to the Northern Regional Science Fair, where local students earned outstanding accolades — including 1st Place in the Middle School division for Henrik Carlson and 2nd Place for Katie Mousel and 1st place in the High School division for Adam Jacobson.
At the Minnesota State Science Fair, 14 students continued to impress. Adam Jacobson, GRHS, received the High School Grand Bronze Award and the 3M Innovator Award, Henrik Carlson, RJEMS, received the Grand Silver Award and 3m Innovator Award and Katie Mousel, RJEMS, earned recognition with the Excellence in Obstacle Navigation Award.
The support from Greater Itasca Area Community Fund and others made it possible for students to travel and participate in this enriching educational event, covering costs such as registration fees, transportation, and accommodations.
This is a shining example of how community giving can fuel student success and inspire future leaders in science, technology, engineering, and math. Thank you to the Greater Itasca Area Community Fund and the other donors for investing in their growth.
